HISTORY OF THE HOMESTEAD POWER SQUADRON

The Homestead Power Squadron, a unit of the United States Power Squadron, a national organization committed to “Boating Safety thru Education”, was chartered December l, 1954.  .  It was the intention of a group of 16 local business men and residents to form this organization for the purpose of teaching SAFE BOATING to any and all persons interested.  This has certainly been accomplished many times over.  Many residents of South Dade have taken the classes in piloting, seamanship, weather and navigation.

When not teaching these courses, members of this squadron have participated in various boating activities; such as boat-a-cades through the everglades, rendezvous, picnics to Elliot Key and many of the islands in Biscayne Bay, as well as trips to Bimini and thruout the Florida Keys.  Members have assisted and rescued a number of stranded boatmen from Miami thru the Keys.

Another important function of squadron members is gathering information concerning changes in land marks, new channel markers, new land installations along the coast, new facilities offered by existing marinas, new buoys, missing markers and navigation hazards.  This information is then submitted to the US Coast & Geodetic Survey.  This along with like info from squadrons all over the coastal US is then used to correct charts and information used by all boaters that venture offshore.

This squadron also has a strong fraternal organization, meeting the third Monday of each month at 7 PM followed by a social gathering.  The weekend fishing and boating events along with rendezvous make for great sharing of boating education and experiences.
